Dessert Beers for the Sweet Tooth in Your Life
I suppose it’s strange that while I don’t particularly love candy, cakes and cookies, I am a BIG FAN of dessert beers. Given the choice between a piece of chocolate cake and a chocolate imperial stout, I’m definitely choosing the stout. Dessert beers are a fun cap to a meal and a chance for breweries to get creative. Here are a few dessert beers I’ve had recently that I’d recommend as a delicious option for a liquid treat, and they just so happen to be from two great New York breweries.
Southern Tier Salted Caramel Imperial Stout
Southern Tier is one of my favorite breweries as they specialize in deep, rich beers and pumpkin! The Salted Caramel has just the right amount of caramel flavor and the 10% ABV isn’t overpowering. It’s also brewed with Himalayan sea salt, which gives the sweetness a great salty balance. Southern Tier suggests serving it as a float with vanilla bean ice cream and I am kicking myself for not trying that! Soon.
Southern Tier Choklat Oranj
I told you Southern Tier does rich beers well. Their Blackwater Series started with the Choklat and has expanded to included these two plus the Creme Brulee and Thick Mint. Those two are definitely on my list. The Choklat Oranj is brewed with orange peels for a nice orange after taste. Again, well balanced and enjoyable even with a lot of alcohol. Sip this one after a late evening meal and drift on to bed.
Evil Twin Imperial Doughnut Break
I’m going to be honest, when I picked this one up from the liquor store, I thought it might be a contender for my new favorite breakfast beer - shout out Morning Wood! As soon as I tried it, I knew - this is a dessert beer. This one is an imperial porter at 11.5% ABV with a slight coffee taste, but thick and slightly bitter compared to those first two. A great option for a dessert beer that’s not too sweet.
