Beers to Take Camping

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved to camp. Family camping, Girl Scout camp, camping with friends - I love getting outside and hiking, swimming, kayaking, etc. As an adult, I realized that camping could become exponentially better - with the addition of beer. Something about drinking a beer in the great outdoors just feels nice and extra relaxing. So without further adieu, I combine two of my loves in life and bring you beers to drink for (almost) every camping occasion.

Around the Campfire

Evil Twin’s Even More Coco Jesus

I can’t with this beer. It’s an imperial stout - my favorite style - with maple and coconut added! It’s delicious. Once the sun goes down and you’re gathered around the campfire, it starts to cool down. You need something to warm you up and get you ready to sleep in a tent for the night. The 12.0% ABV will help you with that.

At the Beach

Prairie Artisan Ale’s Prairie Flare

I discovered Prairie less than a month ago when my dad, my boyfriend Mike and I escaped the chaos of a family weekend and ducked in to Beermiscuous in Chicago for a quick reprieve. They had Prairie’s Birthday Bomb! on tap and I could not turn down a 13% beer. So when I saw their gose, Prairie Flare at the liquor store as I was preparing for our annual Cousin’s Camp, I had to try it. Sour beers are so satisfying on a hot summer day, and let me tell you - this one is TART. It’s brewed with orange and coriander and it’s quite refreshing. Bonus points for the mini Kanye on the can.

On the Lake

Blacklist’s Rhubarb Wit

Here are my requirements for a beer on the boat - light but flavorful, and it helps if I don’t need to get a lot of refills. This Rhubarb Wit from Duluth’s Blacklist Artisan Ales is the answer. It comes in tall boys, it’s a refreshing witbier, AND it’s flavored with rhubarb. Personally, I drank this one floating down a river in a tube, but I think the same principles apply to floating on any sort of waterbody, on any type of water-borne vehicles.

For the Morning Hike

Big Wood’s Morning Wood

You read that right. Although I don’t get around to camping as much as I used to, my favorite camping tradition is to go on a sunrise hike with a can of Morning Wood coffee stout. It’s a fun way to start the day and it’s brewed with Dunn Bros coffee beans, so it’s almost like the real thing. This also was one of my first real craft beer favorites so it will always be near and dear to my heart.

What did I miss? What other beers should I be taking camping? What other activities do you need beer pairings for? Let me know in the comments.
